Trip to Tsi Ming temple (Y 6)

What an interesting trip! We saw so many different items which we would not normally see in everyday life. The speaker shared with us their way of life and their beliefs.

We were able to relate it directly to our growth mindset principles where to succeed in life, we need to support our intelligence with practice and have an "I can" attitude. 

Another idea that we found was similar among all humans is that we all have consciousness, we have a choice of doing good, treating everyone with respect, care and love and not to judge people based on their looks, clothes or their language. 

Our trip today made us realise that New Zealand is very multicultural. There are so many people from all over the world who look different, eat different food, wear different clothes, speak a multitude of languages. But underneath that is the understanding that we are all humans and we value the same things - kindness, compassion and well being of others. That is what makes us human. We are proud to be Kiwis.

Solving Maths Word Problems

Room 25 working on our maths word problems

Room 25 looked at how to solve maths word problems. Our steps are :

1. Read and underline the question.

2.Box key words

3.Circle important numbers - cross out unneeded numbers.

4. Solve - There are many ways to solve the problem depending on the question

- Draw a picture

- Make a chart or table

- Make a list 

- Work backwards

- Find a pattern

- Write a number sentence 

We then discussed as a group and wrote down all the different ways we could solve the problem. As a team we decided which strategy was the most effective.

Jifei's grandma and her friends showing us how Tai Chi is practised.  Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that has evolved over centuries to become a means of alleviating stress and anxiety. It has been shown to improve balance control, fitness, and flexibility, and to reduce the risk of falls.

Jifei's grandma and her friends practice Tai Chi daily and they shared the Tai Chi movement with us. It was amazing to see the all the grandmas in full control of their movements.

Global Village

A few things that we found out during our discussion about race relations: 

1. New Zealand is one of the most ethnically diverse nations on earth and we are also one of the most peaceful. 

2. The change in our society has happened very fast, in less than a generation.

3. In New Zealand, communities across the country host hundreds of events on and around the 

21st of March to mark Race Relations Day.

We reflected on this and our questions is :

What can we do as a nation to preserve the diversity and peacefulness? 

During Race Relations Day, we started creating a global village poster. Here are some of us busy at work creating our global village people.

Today Room 25 celebrated Race Relations Day. This year's theme is "That’s Us: What do we stand for? What do we stand against?"

Future coders hard at work debugging and getting the correct sequence. 

Some comments from our coders:

Milla: I recommend that all schools should regularly teach coding and I learned a lot of new vocabulary related to coding. 

Lily   : When I started, I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to do but then I figured it out for  myself. I enjoyed myself today. My partner wasn't very enthusiastic about it today but I kept on going. I tried al lot of different things and different functions.

Maddison: It's a lot of fun. I thought it would be boring but I realised it was really fun and I wanted to do all the work. It is helping me learn new things.

William  : I kind of found it challenging. I learned how to code and work together. I found it hard to continue. 

Troy: I think coding is important because if you are trying to create an app, you need to create a pretty intense code. My favourite part is creating loops. 

Riley : Coding is important for people who want to create apps. Others can code for fun. CPDS should start coding lessons so that they can be famous. 

Alex : Schools should teach coding because in the future most jobs will be based on coding.

STEM Week Learning to Code

This week is STEM week for the Puriri team. We were grouped into four different groups. Each day we did different activities. Below is the video of us learning to code. Coding is the new literacy. Room 25 went to Waterwise on Wednesday. We realised the important skills we needed to have when we were around water. We had so much fun.
